In 1949, a small group of 13 local families wanting to provide a nurturing and caring environment for their children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) originated the concept of what evolved into the private, non-profit organization known today as BARC, or Bakersfield ARC. They could never have dreamed of the extent to which their hopes and prayers would eventually be answered.
Now 70 years later, through their guidance and foresight, BARC has become the largest Service Provider in Kern County that provides essential job training, employment, and support services for adults with I/DD. As envisioned, BARC remains committed to meeting the needs and desires of our Clients and their families, our customers, our generous supporters, and the entire Bakersfield community.
BARC aims to help adults with I/DD secure employment that will allow them to collect a paycheck as well as build on their confidence and level of independence in the workplace. Clients are trained to work in a variety of industries, and each one is paired with prospective employers to ensure the best match. Community businesses gain a reliable employee while helping BARC Clients earn an income and obtain valuable job experience.
