Bay Area Rehabilitation Center is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization founded in 1948 as a place where children with Cerebral Palsy could receive the special services they required. Since that time, the Center has expanded to provide a variety of services for individuals with disabilities of all ages throughout the greater Houston area. Clients have access to highly trained, compassionate, and caring therapists in the fields of Physical, Occupational and Speech therapies, as well as a variety of current and effective therapy services.
Some individuals in the community may remember the early days under a different name. Bay Area Rehabilitation Center began as the Baytown Spastic Association, treating the disabled children of the original founders. By 1952 it was referred to as The Parents' Cerebral Palsy League, and later as The Baytown Cerebral Palsy League. On February 23, 1966, the center was incorporated as The Baytown Society for Crippled Children.
Many different locations have been home to the center. Originally, meetings were held in parents' homes and various community buildings, such as churches and schools. Humble Oil and Refining donated two buildings to the center, and in 1959 both buildings were moved to 1305 West Sterling. The treatment center began by offering orthopedic, physical and speech therapies as well as a nursery and after-school care for handicapped children and an older youth program including a swimming program.
On December 13, 1979, the treatment center name was formally changed to Bay Area Rehabilitation Center. Due to a constant need for more space, the next location was #2 Price Street, behind the old San Jacinto Methodist Hospital. In 1992, a ground breaking ceremony brought Bay Area Rehabilitation Center to our current location at 5313 Decker Drive.
Bay Area Rehabilitation Center began offering services to both adults and children in 1994 as a means to better utilize our facility and meet the needs of the community. Adult services have evolved to include worker rehabilitation and physical abilities testing for area industry.
Patsy's Destiny Wheelchair Accessible Playground was added to Bay Area Rehabilitation Center in 2002 to provide the community with a recreational area designed with a focus on meeting the needs of individuals with disabilities. Patsy's Destiny provides a great location where individuals with and without special needs can enjoy recreation together and learn from each other's strengths and weaknesses. The recreational area has continued to grow in development through the years, primarily due to over 4,000 hours of volunteer time devoted to the project.
In May 2007 the Baytown Opportunity Center, another long-standing Baytown non-profit organization begun in the mid '50s, merged operations with Bay Area Rehabilitation Center, forming a single larger organization to provide therapeutic and vocational services to the Baytown community. Now known as the Opportunity Center Program, it provides adults with disabilities site based services, day habilitation, vocational training, home community services, Texas Home Living (TXHml), and job placement. The benefit from each of the various areas provides participants with social, life, and vocational skills. These skills allow participants to obtain a sense of empowerment, and to succeed socially in the community.
Bay Area Rehabilitation Center has a history of adapting and adding services that both meet our mission and assist you to live your best life. Bay Area Rehabilitation Center was chosen by the readers of The Baytown Sun as the 2016, 2019, 2020, and 2021 Reader's Choice Award Winner for Best Physical Therapy (there were no categories for occupational and speech therapy)!
