Bruning Funeral Home has the distinction of being one of the oldest, if not the oldest, continuous business in Whitman County. Started in 1895 - it is in its 110th year of operation.
Oliver Hall, a pioneer senator who got into the undertaking business because he operated a wagon shop and was often recruited to make wooden coffins. Hall had been an undertaker for about 10 years when he called Smith & Company in Spokane and asked if they would recommend any good help. L.L. Bruning was sent down from Spokane and that started his ownership in the business in 1895. Bruning was believed to be the first in Colfax to offer embalming.
