As Olan grew up on his family ranch, his interest and passion for the outdoors also grew as he received a healthy dose of God's beauty and wisdom in daily encounters with the diversity of acreage of plowed fields, rocky hills, pastures, creek-bottoms, and cultivated rows of pecan trees. The ranch was one of his most treasured teachers, a teacher that invited questions and exploration. From hills buried with treasures of arrowheads and history, to a natural water resource that weaves and flows through the heart of the property, to fields that have been plowed and planted and plowed and planted, to an orchard that stands obediently in methodical orientation, the rich history of the land has a way of telling its story to its willing observer. This classroom was where knowledge and understanding of pecans was rooted and established, as real life encounters shaped the nuance of growing, harvesting, and enjoying the fruit of the peculiar nut, the pecan.
