In my past 22 years of service at the dealerships all over California. I used to have clients come up to me and started questioning of why the service writer told them that their car need such and such works, and they just have their car service recently, or that they just paid for transmission service and now they are advised to have the transm. service again. I was speechless, but I advised clients politely to see the person who previously assisted them and hopefully they will find a satisfactory solution with manager. As you and I know service writer or advisor is there to make the sale, he or She does not have to know about car but SALE, therefore you'll be sold with a " YES" potentially and likely to pay for more than what your car really needs.
I also heard many times from Clients that some independent shops over charged for this or that repair, why is that ? this is due to a lack of specialized knowledge, not up to date with how current vehicles systems operated, not equiped with factory level diagnostic testers, resources to carry out test plans and remedy as per factory guided procedures. Therefore, misdiagnose of the problems are very common - un-necessary replacement of expensive parts were performed.
