Tom Merrill has over 35 years of experience in all areas of land surveying. He began his career in surveying working for the US Geological Survey during the summers of 1970 and 1971.

Tom grew up near the southerly end of Cayuta Lake just outside of Odessa. He attended and graduated from Odessa-Montour Central School in 1970. He attended Corning Community College for a year, married the former Barbara Young of Rock Stream, NY and enlisted in the US Army in the fall of 1971.

After fullfilling his military commitment, he attended SUNY Alfred where he obtained a degree in Surveying Technology in 1977.

He obtained his Professional Surveying experience while working for a large engineering/surveying firm (Sear Brown Associates, PC) in Rochester, NY and obtained his surveying license for NY in 1983.

He was a partner in an engineering and surveying firm in Fairport, NY (Boncke Mueller Eldred Associates, PC) between 1987 and 1996, where he started and was the managing partner for the surveying department.

Tom worked with Dick Thomas of Donald R Thomas Land Surveyor in Geneseo, NY between 1996 an 1999 where he helped establish the firm as a leader in surveying technology with the use of GPS for surveying projects both large and small.

He joined the nationally known firm of Greenhorne & O’Mara Engineers and Surveyors in 1999 where he headed the surveying department for their Germantown, MD office. He obtained his Maryland Professional Surveyor License in 2003. Located just northerly of Washington, DC this location brought many new and exciting surveying projects to be managed, together with the use of many new concepts and technologies.

Tom and his wife Barbara moved back to this area in the Spring of 2005 when Tom purchased the surveying records of Robinson Surveying and Mapping. Dick Robinson had been in business in the area since the 1980's and had surveyed many properties in Schuyler County and in surrounding counties. After working with Dick in May and June, Tom started his own survey office when Dick retired from the area, in July of 2005.
