Starting the Family Scrap Metal Business
In 1936, Al Nivert dropped out of high school and with a $300 bank loan started a small scrap business in Scranton, PA. His brother Harry joined him in the business after he graduated high school because Al needed someone "with education" on the team. Within two years, Albert Nivert & Co. grew too large for their location, so they moved to a former lumberyard at 551 Front Street.

Establishing Nivert Metal Supply Inc
After serving in the Navy during WWII, Harry returned home with the idea to purchase government surplus steel to sell to local construction companies as a side business.

As the business grew over the next few years, the brothers decided to split the business into two separate companies. Al moved the scrap business to Minooka and Harry established Nivert Metal Supply Inc on the existing site. The business continued serving the metal needs of Northeastern Pennsylvania and, by 1960, the company had grown enough to include a second site in Binghamton, NY.

Expanding the Business
In 1965, construction of the new Spruce Street Bridge forced the company to move. The Keystone Industrial Park in Throop, PA was chosen as the new, 14.7-acre site. The now-125,000-sq. ft. building houses over 6,500 tons of inventory and includes:
14 5-, 10-, and 15-ton bridge cranes
Two Cincinnati shears
Three plasma and oxy burn tables
Four vertical band saws
Three horizontal saws

Keeping the Business in the Family
Today, Nivert Metal Supply Inc is run by Harry's son, Louis. He began working with the company full-time in 1971. Louis's daughter Rebecca joined the company in 2009 and was soon joined by her brother Aaron in 2012. As three generations run the company, and with over 75 years of experience in the metal industry, they continue to serve their valued customers in northeast Pennsylvania and will continue to do so for generations to come.

About the Angel Eye Sculpture Displayed at the Warehouse
Hope Horn, the artist, and McGregor Industries Inc, the fabricator, teamed up to create a beautiful sculpture from steel and aluminum.
Hope stimulated public appreciation of the art of sculpture by being an instructor at Everhart Museum of Scranton, PA. She also conducted classes at East Stroudsburg State College and the University of Scranton.
McGregor Industries Inc makes notable corkscrew staircases, including the Veterans Memorial Arena in Bingham, NY and a pair at Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY. They have a reputation for translating ideas into tangible results in metal. Hope reached out to McGregor Industries for help creating three of her sculptures and they agreed to do the fabrication and installation.
The first collaboration was so successful that McGregor Industries asked Hope to do a fourth sculpture. The new piece would occupy a place outside of the McGregor plant. The one sculpture, made from aluminum, is called the Angel Eye. It is 7-1/2 feet tall and McGregor industries made two. One stands outside Nivert Metal Supply Inc and the other is at William Penn Memorial Museum in Harrisburg.
Angel Eye is made up of three compound-curved pieces of 1/2 inch 5052 H32 alloy, which are joined by gas metal arc welding and shielded with 100% argon. McGregor used a press brake to make a series of bends to achieve the effect of a continuous curve. Once the pieces were bent, workers welded them together. The power sanding gave the surface a satin finish, which completed the job.
