Community > Community Organisations
In 1964, President Lyndon Johnson and Sargent Shriver launched the War on Poverty to right the wrongs carried out against the poor and minorities. In this broad legislation, Community Action agencies were launched and OCCAC was born, bringing local leaders together to solve local problems.
In 1965 a group of committed community members formed Okanogan County Community Action Council. We were one of the first Community Action agencies in the nation. Fifty-two years later, the staff and Board of Directors of this organization have created amazing infrastructure for the community and provided help in the form of a hand up out of poverty.
Our basic mission to reduce poverty in the County is just as needed now as it was then but we have accomplished much including starting and spinning off the following:
Community Schools, Tonasket
Self Help Housing – over 60 homes built by a mix of owner sweat equity and contractors
Economic Alliance (originally OCCED)
Literacy Council
Housing Authority of Okanogan County
Head Start
Dispute Resolution Center
And More!
