Sharman can't even remember when she began to love sewing! Ma, her grandmother, said she was about 5, but Sharman remembers the beginning as 8th grade sewing classes. By the time she reached high school, she went shopping with friends and sketched the outfits they tried on. Then she went home and sewed them herself. One of her most vivid memories is shopping with her mother to buy fabric for a final school project. It was an anxious moment: the fabric cost $3.00 a yard! She made every cut with the utmost care!
Sharman loves color, and she found her passion in decorative sewing: embroidery, cutwork, applique, monogramming, silk ribbon embroidery, and especially decorative lettering. She also discovered that she has a gift for understanding how a machine works. She loves to share that knowledge because "If you understand why a machine does what it does, you can make it do anything!"
In 1984, Richard and Sharman opened Sharman's Sewing Center in Longview. They started with just 900 square feet, a few bolts of fabric, Pfaff sewing machines, and a goal:
