In 1991, Joanne and Ross Currie purchased Splash Café in Pismo Beach days before the annual Clam Festival in October. That incredibly busy weekend was just the start of a 30+ year journey that has seen the Curries improve the clam chowder recipe that is now award-winning and world famous, expand to a second location in San Luis Obispo with a full-service bakery, ship the chowder nationally, distribute in Costco stores and other restaurants, and start a food product line. It’s Splash Café’s insistence on using the highest quality ingredients and customer loyalty that has grown chowder sales from 5000 gallons a year in 1991 to over 40,000 gallons a year.
Joanne’s passion for flavors and experimenting in the kitchen has grown beyond the two cafes, leading her to create a food product line utilizing all the incredible flavors of the central coast. Her Carrot Pepper Hot Sauce, Raucous Daucus, was the first product and created specifically for the creamy Clam Chowder. Then followed a trio of Smoky Spice Rubs intended for year-round grilling; Smoky Espresso, Smoky Citrus and Smoky Chimi.
