In 2005, The Diodoro Guerra descendants were recognized by the City of McAllen as a “Founding Family” in South Texas. It all began in 1908 with two brothers, Enrique and Modesto, sons of Diodoro Guerra, who were eager to begin their own business. They traveled from Starr County north to San Antonio to sell a pack of mules. The trip was long, hard and very successful. After traveling back to McAllen, with the proceeds from the sale, they built their first business, a mercantile store, on 17th street in downtown McAllen. The Guerra family made their mark in the early development of McAllen, by establishing so many more businesses along 17th street, it became known as “Guerra Street”.
Now, more than 100 years later, at the turn of the 21st century, the Guerra Family history in downtown McAllen has been revived. Two of Diodoro Guerra’s great-grandsons, cousins retired District Judge Arturo Guerra, and Nuevo Santander Gallery owner, Che Guerra, decided to restore and renovate one of the original “Guerra” buildings. They opened the “patio on Guerra” in October of 2008, introducing fine dining set in an authentic vintage atmosphere in historic downtown McAllen. While refurbishing this 100 year old building, Che and Arturo painstakingly paid careful attention to detail in order to reflect a period in history of charm and elegance.
The Guerra family and staff are committed to making your fine dining experience at the Patio on Guerra a memorable one. We thank you for coming and hope you enjoy!
