Evertt Van Loo was born & raised in Holland MN on the family farm. At the age of 13 the family moved to Lynden WA. He got his start in mechanics working for Simon Wessiluis & Heinie Hoving at S&H Service. During WWII Evertt served aboard the USS Caster as a machinist. Returning from the war he picked up where he left off as mechanic for Phil Mades of Everson. Working his way to head mechanic & eventually Service Writer for Hinton Motors in Lynden.

In 1966 Evertt bought the Mobil Service Station on the corner of 3rd & Front St starting Van Loo’s Auto Service. Graduating from college in 1972, Evertt’s 2nd son Jack was asked to help out during the summer. Auto repair must have been in his blood because Jack has been at the family business ever since.

Outgrowing the service station Evertt bought the old Modern Auto Body building 2 blocks away at 205 Liberty St in 1977. The business continued to grow, Jay DeGroot was added as a 3rd mechanic. Jack & Jay bought the business from Evertt in 1983 when he retired.

Two more full time mechanics were eventually hired & in 1999 Evertt’s 3rd son Roy, who had spent 16 years in the automotive parts business, became part owner when Jay DeGroot retired. Evertt continued to spend time at the shop talking to customers or just picking up a broom & sweeping the floor. 2008 saw the remodel of the old building into a state of the art automotive repair facility.

Today Van Loo’s Auto Service continues to be a major independent automotive repair facility where people of the community & surrounding area trust to have their cars & light trucks repaired & maintained with confidence. The confidence knowing that they & their vehicle will be treated as family. Just as Evertt treated everyone who came to see him.
