Farming > Forestry
The majority of the lands under the ongoing management of W. M. Beaty & Associates, Inc. (WBA) share a long tenure of ownership dating back to the late 1800’s. These pine dominated forestlands were originally acquired by upper Midwest lumberman T.B. Walker as he expanded his Minnesota based Red River Lumber Company into northeastern California with the express purpose of acquiring “enough timber to enable the mills to run permanently with the timber supply always growing”. In 1910 the Walker family began construction of a large mill complex along with expansion of the surrounding company town of Westwood. As generations passed, Walker’s heirs continued T.B.’s vision of sustainable timber harvest under what was then the Shasta Forests Company and commonly referred to as “SHAFCO”. As the Walker family’s interests evolved following a partition of the timberlands and the liquidation of SHAFCO, William Beaty, the General Manager of Shasta Forests Company at the time, was encouraged to form a separate organization that focused exclusively on forest management rather than mill operations and production of finished lumber. In late 1969, W. M. “Bill” Beaty along with founding associates Bob Manning, Jim Cochrane, Quenton Bruton, and Loren Sargent established W. M. Beaty & Associates, Inc. and opened its main office in Redding California. The lands owned by Walker family heirs and descendants continue to be managed by WBA with the same dedication towards sustainable forestry and environmental stewardship.
